Special Services

Lombard District 44 provides a full continuum of services in the areas of Special Education and Section 504.  These services are provided to students who meet specific eligibility requirements outlined by the Federal and State Rules and Regulations.  An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed in collaboration with parents, general education teachers, and special services staff on an annual basis.

Students with disabilities who do not qualify for an individualized education program under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, may qualify for services under Section 504 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 if the student (i) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, (ii) has a record of a physical or mental impairment, or (iii) is regarded as having a physical or mental impairment.  Questions about the identification, assessment and placement of students should be directed to Clodagh Sorrentino, Director of Special Services at (630) 827-4428.

INTERPRETER SERVICES

Public school districts are required to take whatever action is necessary to facilitate a parent or guardian’s understanding of and participation in IEP and Section 504 meetings. This includes the provision of interpreter services for parents/guardians whose native language is not English or a sign language interpreter for parents/guardians who are deaf or hard of hearing. In the absence of qualified interpreters on staff, school districts may use outside vendors, including telephonic interpreters. Parents/guardians have the right to request that an interpreter provided by the school district serve no other role during an IEP or Section 504 meeting, and the school district must make reasonable efforts to comply with that request.

To request an interpreter or if you have any questions about interpretation services, please contact Yvette Policastro at 630-827-4431.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation.

At Lombard District 44, the program Second Step is utilized with our students for the purposes of SEL. More information can be found by visiting the links below.
