NGSS Next Generation Science Standards

District 44 is in the midst of migrating our science curriculum to the new Next Generation Science Standards.  For more information about the new NGSS standards, please follow this link to the official Next Generation Science Standards website:   http://www.nextgenscience.org/

Glenn Westlake Middle School worked with a transition plan during the 2015 - 2016 school year to make sure that all students moving on to Glenbard had the necessary curriculum items that would lead to success at the high school level, while being introduced to some NGSS units.  During the 2016 - 2017 school year, Westlake students will be fully immersed within the NGSS process.  Our 9 science teachers have worked for 2.5 years to develop new units of instruction and coordinate resources for NGSS.  Please check out the GW science teachers’ web pages for detailed curriculum and homework information.

Our six elementary buildings will begin with our new NGSS curriculum during the 2017 - 2018 school year. Currently, members of the K - 5 Science Committee are receiving professional development and will be working with the Math & Science Coordinator to plan for this transition throughout the 2016 - 2017 school year.

Other opportunities for Science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) are bulleted below:

  • Clubs for Science and/or STEM offered for the Elementary and Middle School students within individual schools
  • Discovery Center:  Students in grades K - 5 take a field trip to our Discovery Center, located at Manor Hill School.  The center was designed to combine authentic experiences for students to explore science, math and technology.  We are currently working on refreshing this curriculum as well to go along with the new NGSS standards and the STEM initiative in the United States.  An updated website for the Discovery Center will be available soon.
  • Humanities Courses at GWMS involving STEM:
    • STEM 6
    • STEM 7
    • Industrial Tech/Robotics
    • STEM 8 with Scratch Coding
Humanities courses are also beginning the curriculum review cycle.

Science Fair 2017  Check out our website for details about our K - 5 Science Fair. The new updated information is now posted.  Check out the Large Science Fair Packet and the Important Dates to Remember pdf files.  Science Fair is Saturday, March 4, 2017
